]]> It’s that time again! The infamous Newport to Bermuda Race will be returning to historic Newport, Rhode Island for the 53rd year in a row. This biennial offshore sailing race has been held since 1906 and each year brings spectators and sailing enthusiasts from all over the world to Newport for the festivities. It is renowned as one of the most prestigious ocean races and this year will be starting June 21st when the sailors will depart from the beautiful Castle Hill Hotel in Newport and ending approximately June 29th when the first boat surpasses the finish line in Bermuda.

Helly Hansen Newport has been sponsoring the race since 2016. Outfitting teams that have participated in the race as well as supplying logoed gear to spectators, friends and family of the participants. Each year Helly Hansen Newport introduces new and innovative Marine styles to the Bermuda Race collection that serve as memorabilia of the race as well as delivering the quality that Helly Hansen products offer.

When dealing with various weather conditions it’s important to stay dry and warm. Our insulators offer warmth, windproof, and water-resistance. Insulators are great pieces as you can wear them during any outdoor activity. These jackets can be worn during the spring, fall, and winter. With our LifaLoft material, we are able to offer lightweight insulators making it easier for individuals to wear and bring them wherever they go. These jackets are perfect for layering during the colder months. We offer a wide range of insulator pieces for both men and women to fit your specific needs. Our insulators range from LifaLoft‘s to Down to Softshells. These insulators can come in vests, jackets, and long jackets.

Our Down is ethically sourced from geese and ducks that have not been live-plucked, force-fed, or subjected to unnecessary harm. The outer layer offers 100% waterproofing while the inner layer offers insulation. This allows you to adapt to any kind of weather; spring and summer you can wear the outer shell. Our top selling men’s shirt, the Ocean Polo, is a great staple piece in any man’s wardrobe. This polo is made out of Ocean Bound recycled materials and offers UPF 50+ sun protection all day long This polo also offers material that is quick dry and will wick moisture away from your skin allowing you to stay cool.

While it is important to apply sunscreen especially for long summer days, wearing protective clothing allows you to stay active and keep enjoying your favorite activity in the height of summer. The first Ocean Race was held in 1973, making this their 50th year running. The Ocean Race originally started at The Whitbread Race. The first race consisted of 19 teams. This year there are only 11 teams that are split into two groups. The Ocean Race is the ultimate test of sailing, being the world’s longest and toughest professional sporting event. These sailors have dedicated years/decades to winning this race. There are no breaks for these sailors as they work 24/7 going against anything the ocean throws at them to make it to the next destination first. The 2023 race is a five-month, 32,000-nautical mile long. It features a leg with the longest racing distance in the 50-year history of the event – a 12,750 nautical mile stretch from Cape Town, South Africa, to Itajaí, Brazil.  


There are two dynamic classes of boats: the IMOCA, a 60-foot single-hull yacht used by the five teams that sail worldwide. The other class is VO65, a 65-foot single-hull yacht used by the six teams racing three legs for The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup. Both classes are capable of traveling over 600 nautical miles in 24 hours. To win, The Ocean Race is based on a scoring system, and points are awarded each leg for the number of entries. So, for IMOCA, 1st place gets 5 points, second place gets 4, and so on. For VO65, first place is awarded 6 points and goes down. However, Leg 3 and 5 teams are eligible to receive double points.  .

The Ocean Race has officially made its way to Newport! On May 10th 11th Hour Racing Team was the first team to hit the shores of Newport. This 17-day leg tested these teams’ skills by facing transitions in weather systems and wind gusts of over 50 knots. From May 13th-21st at Fort Adams, Ocean Park Live will be open! This festival has a lot of activities, such as games/crafts, trying out sailing, food trucks, music, and more!
